The Survey of Maternal Expectation and Satisfaction to Level II Ultrasonography Via Questionnaire

Abstract

|
Objective: Level II ultrasonography use is increasing steadily, but the domestic research on maternal expectation and satisfaction for the test is absent, so objective evaluation is needed.
Methods: We included 168 uncomplicated singleton pregnancies that visited Kyung Hee University Hospital from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009. Two surveys were administered before and after level II ultrasonography with questionnaires evaluating patients’ expectations and satisfaction.
Results: Before the ultrasonography, 84 participants (50%) of the women answered that they underwent the test because "The doctor recommended", or "I heard it is a routine test, or other mothers also underwent it,", therefore performance of level II ultrasonography was influenced equally by oneself and others. One hundred thirty participants (77%) of the women answered, "I know what level II ultrasonography is.", but 105 participants (67%) did not know that "Fetal chromosomal abnormalities could be suspected by the examination." After the ultrasonography, 146 participants (87%) answered "I got enough information," 145 participants (86%) answered "I am 90 to 100 percent confident that my baby will be healthy.", 133 participants (79%) answered "Level II ultrasonography is necessary.", and 156 participants (93%) said "I will recommend this test to other pregnant women, or I will do the test in the next pregnancy."
Conclusion: Before the examination, participants have high expectations of the capability of level II ultrasonography to assess the baby’s health. After the examination, they have great satisfaction about the information they obtained and confidence about baby’s health status. Accordingly they thought level II ultrasonography necessary as a part of prenatal care.
